No one can really say when or where a survival situation comes up.
Even if you prepare your home with all of your emergency supplies, how sure are you that you will be at your own safe space then?
More that that, if it is an event that has affected your whole city or state, you can expect the stores that sell self-defense weapons to be closed.
Part of your survival skills is to know how to make weapons to protect yourself anytime, anywhere. Although you may be able to find more materials if you are home or have access to them, knowing how to make something with as few items as possible is the most ideal. This way, even if you are in an emergency situation, you are able to quickly put something together and be able to save yourself from harm.
Here are some common weapons that you can also manufacture at home, using materials that you have lying around.
1. DIY Pepper Spray
Pepper spray is perfect for subduing an attacker and giving you enough time to run away or make your move. Although it is most popular as a girl’s weapon against criminals, it is also a very good weapon to have in case of a survival event.
To make your own pepper spray, you will need these:
- spicy red pepper
- rubbing alcohol
- baby oil
- 1 drinking glass and 1 tablespoon; or a blender
- a coffee filter
First, put 2 tablespoons of the red pepper in the glass and add the alcohol, covering the pepper by about 1 cm. Mix and grind them together for around 10 minutes, or simply use the blender to make it easier.
Next, add the baby oil until the level of the liquids is about 0.5 cm more in the glass. Stir again for 5 minutes before getting a second glass that is covered by a coffee filter. Pour the solution in order to filter the parts of the chili pepper. Fill any spray container with the solution and close it tightly. Make sure you mix the bottle regularly to make sure separation of the ingredients do not happen.
2. Homemade Stun Gun
If you are being attacked or being engaged in body combat, you will need all the help to defeat or incapacitate him, especially when you are physically disadvantaged. In this case, a stun gun will be another great option so that you have enough time to run away or fight back. You can literally and figuratively shock the attacker who will not expect you to have a stun gun.
For this project, you need:
- continuous piezoelectric sparker with batteries
- electrical wires, various thicknesses from normal to thick
- a battery holder that can accommodate 2 AAA batteries
- pliers and a Dremel
- a glue gun and soldering iron
- cutter and screwdriver
The first step involves carefully taking apart the sparker. Set aside the screws and casing for later. Once open, remove other items like the LED light. The wires from the metal neck should also be cut from the base.
Take the 2 thick electric wires and connect them to the 2 terminals where the wires were removed. It is important to have some extra wire so it should be longer than the metal neck. Put together the battery wire and holder. Once finished, reassemble the pieces together. Since the battery holder is bigger, it will most likely not fill the case. In this situation, polish the plastic to make it fit.
The two electrical wires should be cut at the end of the neck, stripping them and soldering the ends together.
Put two 1-inch pieces of normal size wire and tie the ends as well. Afterward, connect all 4 wires and glue them down. Before fully closing the case, it is best to try and test it out. Should it be necessary, add glue. It is important that the inner parts are not subject to high humidity and movement.
3. PVC or Wooden Bow
A bow is different because it allows you to hit attackers that are farther away. However, you have to be a good shot and at least adept at using a bow and arrow. So make sure you practice a lot with your own homemade version.
For this weapon, you will need:
- a 1 to 1.5-inch PVC piping cut into segments of 4 feet long or a 2 to 3-inch plywood cut 4 feet long
- string (mason wire is best)
Cut grooves into both sides of the PVC pipes where the string will be tied. When using wood, trim the plywood first to get the desired thickness for the handle, and then carve the notches for the string on both ends.
Get the string and loop two pieces of string around one end. Bend the PVC pipe or the piece of wood until you achieve the right curve and then tie the other ends of the two pieces of string. Make sure to cut the extra string.
4. A Clubbing Tool
When thinking of a good weapon, you can also take advice from the primitive human. They lived in the wild, where they are in constant danger but without access to today’s guns or grenades. Still, their clubbing tools were simple but very effective. If they could do this with very little tools, so can you.
For this weapon, you need:
- a piece of wood for the club like a table leg, a broom handle, or even a tree branch
- a rock
- some long nails (optional)
This very simple tool only needs a few steps. First prepare the wood, scraping it until it is perfect for grabbing. Make a hole on one side of the wood and wedge the rock inside. Use the string to keep it in place. To make it even deadlier, use some long nails as well.
These are only some of the tools you can make at home with minimal materials and work. You may also create something more complex like a gun, but that will require a bit more skill. After all, even with the simplest of items, you can already create deadly and efficient weapons that can save your life when faced with a threat.
